Managing diabetes: 5 steps to make it easier

Living with diabetes can be a real drag.  Planning every little thing can be exhausting, and some days you’re just plain worn out.  Tried everything but your blood sugar’s still all over the place?  You’re not alone.  There’s a surprising lack of solid info out there about managing diabetes.

But here’s the good news:  You CAN live a full, energetic life, even with diabetes.  It just takes a few key things.  Get these down, and you’ll be cruising.

Slim Down Smart

The more you weigh, the higher your blood sugar tends to be.  Losing weight is HUGE for managing diabetes.  Even a small loss (like 5%) can make a big difference.  But, as someone with diabetes, you gotta be smart about how you lose weight.

Ditch the Sugary Drinks

We know, those sweet drinks are tempting! But they’re a major no-go. And don’t forget about juice,  it’s often packed with just as much sugar as soda!  Cutting these out can be tough, but you’ll feel so much better.  Try swapping them for lemon water or sparkling water at first, and eventually, aim to ditch the sugary drinks altogether.

Veg Out!

Veggies are your friends! They fill you up without adding to your weight, and they can actually be delicious if you give them a chance.  Don’t fall for the myth that you have to avoid all carbs,  that can backfire big time.  Find some easy, tasty veggie recipes you love, and you might even start craving them.

Become a Kitchen Whiz

Cooking your own meals gives you total control over what you eat.  You can make sure you’re getting the right balance of everything.  Plus, it can save you money and even be therapeutic!  The key is to keep things interesting with new recipes and meal plans so you don’t get bored.

Get Moving!

Walking, working out – whatever you enjoy!  Exercise is a game-changer for diabetes.  It burns sugar, boosts your mood, makes your body more sensitive to insulin, and helps keep your blood sugar in check.  It also lowers your risk of heart disease and nerve damage.  If you’re prediabetic, exercise can even help prevent type 2 diabetes!

These steps are all effective on their own.  The challenge is juggling them all consistently.  And that’s where a lot of people struggle – and that’s okay!
